SOAR PROGRAM INFORMATION:
At a comprehensive school, a full time student attends class each day, and is usually given a schedule of six classes. In the SOAR Program, the student completes the same amount of work at home and reports to the school as often as necessary to complete assignments and receive new course work.
How do I know if I'm working on schedule?
When you begin a class, you and your teacher sign a written agreement. The agreement specifies what work must be completed each week. If in doubt with due dates, please email your teacher. You and your teacher will create a specific plan curtailed to meeting your academic goals and completing your work on a schedule. Each student is provided with an academic calendar to keep track of appointments.
Can I work faster?
The minimum amount of work due weekly is approximately 30 hours. You can set the maximum, based on how many additional hours you are willing to work on top of the 30 hour minimum. You should inform your teacher if you wish to accomplish more than the minimum and make arrangements to complete a course as quickly as you are able to. If you complete your work early, email your teacher and then bring in your work so you can proceed faster. All work finished early should be at the 'B' or 'A' level.
When do I attend school?
Students leave each appointment with a learning contract specifying the date and time when all assignments on each contract are due. Most meetings are held once a week. Some students may have a different teacher for math or foreign language; however, your SOAR teacher will be supervising these classes making sure each student receives tutoring when needed and ensuring that all work is turned in to the teacher in a timely manner.
Special resources for students:
Media Center/Library: A large collection of books and computers are available for students to use for research during school hours.
Extra Curricular Activities: Twain High School has several activities and clubs for all students. Our school also hosts a full range of senior activities to include prom and a beautiful graduation ceremony.
Reminders to Students and Parents
Parents: Be aware that by enrolling your student in Independent Study you are assuming a much greater responsibility for his/her education. You must monitor daily progress and insist that assignments be completed on schedule. This is a program for motivated, self-disciplined students.
Students:
*Our goal is to help you earn a high school diploma by completing the courses of study required by SDUSD.
*Individualizing instruction to meet your needs requires flexibility in the number of appointments and types of assignments.
*Please inform your teacher immediately if you have difficulty with your work or need help. Good communication solves all problems and we are here to serve you.
*Assignments must be conducted before your turn-in date. On the day the work is due please be sure and check that all activities have been completed, your name and date has been placed on each page as you worked through the assignments, and the work is labelled properly.
*We expect you to appear in person (during distance learning students and teacher will meet via Zoom, FaceTime) and see your teacher as often as required to master course objectives.
*Do not miss your scheduled appointments. It is your responsibility to promptly reschedule any appointment missed due to an emergency. Appointments in the SOAR Program range from 45 minutes to 90 minutes depending what subject you are studying - please plan accordingly!
